Welcome

EU Film Festival 2006 kicks off in Bangkok on 2 November and ends in Chiang Mai on November 26

Belgium takes part at this year's Festival with "The Child" - winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, and with "Shades"

Enjoy some of the funniest and darkest European films from recent years in the forthcoming European Film Festival. 19 films from 18 European countries will give Thai audiences the chance to find out just what makes Europeans laugh and cry. Now in its 15th year, the Festival will be showing at the SFX Cinema Emporium, Bangkok from 2-12 November and Vista Kardsuankaew, Chiang Mai from 16-26 November. All films are being shown in their original language with English subtitles.

The European Union Film Festival 2006 is organised by the Delegation of the European Commission to Thailand and the Embassies and cultural organisations of the 25 EU Member States. The Festival gives Thai audiences a chance to discover the vitality of European cinema while celebrating the cultural diversity of Europe.

Belgium will be showing two films during this year’s Festival :

The Child (“L’enfant”) by the brothers Dardenne and winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005, is without doubt one of the Festival’s main attractions. The Child tells the story of Sonja and Bruno; after 18-year old Sonja (Déborah Francois) gives birth to a baby, disinterested father and petty thief Bruno (Jérémie Renier) falls in with a group that buys and sells children on the black market. The child is a gritty Belgian tale of how hasty decisions fuelled by greed can have tragic effects.

Shades by Erik Van Looy takes place on a fractured movie shoot. Washed-up director Paul Sullivan (Mickey Rourke) is attempting to make a comeback with a film about a famous serial killer (Jan Decleir). He is getting friction from all sides, including the family members of the victims who want the film shut down, a mentally unstable producer, a lead actor (Gene Bervoets) with serious addiction issues, and a young female actress willing to do anything to have a career.
