| The chip passport: Belgium scores a world first |
Belgium will score a world first when it begins phasing in 'chip passports' in mid-November 2004. By the end of the 10-week transition period in late January 2005, all new passports issued will contain a built-in chip.
Under international agreements, the chip will initially contain such information as the holder's particulars, signature and photo. Fingerprints will not be recorded on the chip during this phase, as that first require the passage of appropriate European legislation - currently in preparation.
Any Belgians who already hold a passport may rest assured that they will not be negatively impacted in any way whatsoever by the advent of the new chip passports, or by any subsequent modifications or improvements. Any passports currently in circulation will remain valid until their expiry date. (Passports are usually valid for five years.)
