    Family-reunion based on DNA testing

    When is DNA testing indicated?

Whenever the family ties between the applicant and his relatives cannot be proven by the required official documents, the authenticity of the presented documents or their content cannot be sufficiently guaranteed, a DNA test can prove the existence of the family ties.

The DNA test thus provides an alternative mean of proving the existence of family ties in case this is impossible or difficult by official paperwork. Please do therefore also consult the info regarding the basic family-reunion visa procedure explained on this site.

    Who can request DNA testing?

DNA testing is never imposed upon the applicant.

The DNA test can be requested by the applicant himself; or suggested by the immigration services in Belgium or the Embassy.

The applicant is always free to accept or decline the proposed testing.

    How does it work?

Blood samples of the applicant and of his relative(s) residing is Belgium are analyzed to verify the existence of family ties. The analysis takes 4 to 8 weeks. Results are sent from the lab to the Belgian Immigration Services; they then inform the family members residing in Belgium of the results and take a decision on the application filed within the framework of family reunification.

The family member(s) in Belgium has to:

-express his agreement with the proceedings by filling in the appropriate form

-pay in advance the cost of testing to the Belgian medical lab

-give a blood sample (to be done at the Belgian medical lab)

The applicant(s) abroad in Uganda has to:

-express his agreement with the proceedings by filling in the appropriate form

-Blood samples will only be taken locally (in Uganda) after payment for the lab tests to be carried out in Belgium. The immigration services send the proof of payment by the family member in Belgium directly to the embassy.
